In 2013 Jessica co-founded the Marshallese Educational Initiative (MEI), a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Arkansas that blends scholarly research with practical outreach efforts to create awareness on a national stage, while also making a real difference in the lives of individual Marshallese.
As MEI's Academic Advisor, Jessica consults on the organization's humanities programming. She also collaborates with members of the Marshallese community to highlight their rich oral tradition and musical knowledge through local workshops and exhibits and educational programming geared toward an international audience, such as Nuclear Remembrance Day events and climate change forums.
Jessica serves as the Humanities Scholar for the Marshallese Oral History Project & Digital Music Archive, a multi-year project that received a major grant through the Arkansas Humanities Council / National Endowment for the Humanities. She is also an editor of MEI's Marshallese language & culture textbook.
